A man who robbed a supermarket and attempted to rob a charity shop with a samurai sword has been jailed for four years.

Nottingham Crown Court heard Lee Young, of Percy Street, Eastwood, went into Tesco Express in the town at 23:00 on 27 December, and stole cash from the till after threatening the shop worker with his sword.

The next day, he tried to rob The Lighthouse charity shop, but a female shop assistant “behaved very stoically and refused to open the till”.

The 32-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of robbery, one of attempted robbery and two counts of having a bladed article on Tuesday.

His defence lawyer said the qualified plasterer suffered from “a drug habit that’s ruined his life for the last 10 years”.

He added Young wanted to use his time in prison to overcome his heroin addiction, so he can “be in a position to have a proper relationship with his son”.

Judge John Burgess, sentencing, said: “Drugs have ruined your life, don’t let it ruin your family’s life.”

The judge also praised the female charity worker, who refused to open the till, despite being threatened with the sword.
